Street Art
Street art is hard to define but begins with cave paintings on the walls of caves. Street art and graffiti are linked in the same category. Graffiti is known as spray painting, charcoal, pencil drawings, or designs on walls of buildings, bus terminals, subways, or bridges. Street art and graffiti are now studied as an academic discipline.
History of Street Art
Street art has been used to upgrade urban environments and let citizens reclaim public space. It is often an expression of political beliefs and there are many museums and libraries dedicated to the study of street art. Street art is an open invitation for the public to interact and learn from the work. Street art has a pictorial focus rather than text.
Authorities often have problems with street art because it questions traditional values and is percieved as vandalism. When pictures were added to the graffiti then street art became very popular. Often a picture conveys a more powerful message than words. Many street art pieces in cities are light whimsical pieces but some have political messages.
Early street artists used many different mediums to create art. They used stencils, wheat paste, and installations. The Wall Street Bull a sculpture by Arturo D Modica was installed without government permission. It was removed and re-installed later where it stayed for two decades later.
The Underbelly Project brought 100 artists in New York City into an abandoned subway station to design street art. The term street art became used when the art became popular and was recognized by the media. Overall it is art created in public places outside of traditional art. It exists around the world as means of expression for artists in large cities.
