Street Art
Artists have created Street Art since World War 2 followed by modern street art starting in the 1960’s. Street Art is a broad word used to describe any artwork in a public location outside of any traditional art venue. Street Art is recognizable by large bold colors, letters, and imagery that can be 2D or 3D. The most well-known forms of Street Art are graffiti, poster art, sticker art, street installations, and sculptures. The most recent version of Street Art is video projection being shown on New York’s Time Square.
The Meaning behind Street Art
Street Artists come from every walk of life therefore, Street Art is a worldwide art form that contains many meanings for the artist and the viewers. From an artists’ perspective, choosing the street as a canvas allows them to communicate directly to the public at large without any constraints from a traditional gallery. Street Art is typically used to bring awareness to social, and political problems that plague our society. Street Art is known to bring a sense of activism to the art which, helps people that would usually have little resources to create change. Street Art allows artists to travel freely spreading there designs and societal views allowing the artist to gain large media attention and a cult-like following status.

Street Art for many decades was considered a crime of vandalism. Those ideas have changed over the decades significantly. Street Art is now used for large corporations through graphic design. Cities now fund and commission Street Art to decorate city walls. Artists use Street Art to restore and revitalize abandoned buildings that would have been considered an eye-sore and demolished.
